City Council report calls for increased funding to clean up Orchard Beach

(08/08/04) ORCHARD BEACH - A new report from City Council investigators states the city needs to do a better job of cleaning up Orchard Beach. They are calling for increased funding to clean up the beach, which is on pace to have nearly a million visitors this year.

Officials say they found far too much debris floating in the water during a visit to the beach in July. Investigators found soda bottles, children's underwear and a dead fish floating close to swimmers.

But on their return trip a few days later, staffers reported seeing a significant improvement. So many parks officials question the accuracy of the study, which does not account for storms and other high debris events.
