'Today's Stars, Tomorrow's Heroes' amateur boxing show held in Mott Haven
(08/08/04) MOTT HAVEN - An amateur boxing show was recently held outside the Mott Haven Community Center. A boxing star from the Bronx, former World Champion Iran "The Blade" Barkley, sponsored the event dubbed "Today's Stars, Tomorrow's Heroes."
Hundreds of boxing fans jammed the streets outside the center to watch the bouts. Another former world champion from the Bronx, Aaron "Superman" Davis, joined Barkley at the fights, which were all sanctioned by U.S.A. Boxing. Barkley says he holds the show as a way to give back to the community where he grew up.
In the 118-pound weight class, Robert Lilly from the Bronx beat Dustin Fleicher in a decision. In the 100-pound division, Pedro Sosa from the Webster PAL won a decision against Adalberto Morales. And the 11-year-olds let the punches fly in the 66-pound weight class. Marcus Suarez from the Webster PAL won his bout against Uriel Heurta by a decision. The Barkley Belt went to the winner of each fight.
