Bronx third-graders begin re-taking standardized English and math exams

Third-graders across the Bronx and city were once again sharpening up their pencils to take the all important standardized English and math exams.

On Monday, thousands of students who finished preparing for the exams at the Summer Success Academy took the English re-test. The students say they are more hopeful this time around because they studied more and took practice tests. And parents are also confident that their kids will do well.

Third-graders cannot be promoted to the fourth-grade if they don't pass the tests as part of Mayor Bloomberg's new social promotion policy. If the students fail again they will be given one more chance to appeal, but if their appeal is denied they must repeat the third-grade.

Students will take the math exam on Tuesday.
