Street corner dedicated for woman who devoted her life to serving her community

(08/14/04) MATTIE HARRIS PLACE - One Bronx woman who devoted her life to serving her neighborhood had a street corner named after her on Saturday.

Tilden Street at Barnes Avenue is now Mattie Harris Place. The Bronx activist, who passed away more than a year ago, was known for always being there for her neighbors. She never held a political office, yet did all the work most politicians do from advocating jobs and health care to cleaning up neighborhood streets. Those that knew her say she worked tirelessly to make sure her community was never overlooked.

Mattie Harris lived in the northeast part of The Bronx for about 30 years.
