Bronx officials, health group hold educational health care meeting

(08/15/04) UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - Bronx Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (D-Bronx) and a local organization held an informational meeting Sunday to show Bronx residents of color that they may need better health care.

The organization, Bronx Health Reach, cited statistics at the meeting that show people of color in the Bronx get more ailments and die younger than white Americans. The organization and Benjamin are working together to stop what they call unequal access to health care. Benjamin says he is pushing a bill that will stop the "racial inequality" in the Bronx and New York.

Bronx leaders say the inequality within the health system could take years to repair, but they will continue to work on fixing it.
