Mayor announces 41 percent of third-graders passed English, math re-tests

The results are in for Bronx and city third-graders who re-took the standardized English and math exams, and education officials are pleased. The mayor says 41 percent of the third-graders will now be moving on to the fourth-grade.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the results are proof that ending social promotion in the city is the right thing to do. To help the students pass, they were encouraged to take part in the Summer Success Program. According to the mayor and Department of Education officials, more than half of the kids who attended went on to pass the tests.

Still there are nearly 5,000 third-graders who still do not know their fate since they either never took the tests the second time around, did not attend summer school or still have appeals in the works. Decisions about those students will be made next week.

Overall, the mayor and education officials are calling the new social promotion policy a success.
