Fun Math School slated to open this fall under fire for its official school number

The Fun Math School, which is slated to open this fall, has come under fire again - this time for its official school number.

Riverdale residents and local officials say the number assigned to the Fun Math School is suspiciously similar to an already established school across the street. The Fun Math School is also known as MSHS 241 while the other school is MSHS 141. Residents fear it's part of a plan to tie the schools together, which many in the area do not want.

Department of Education officials say schools are assigned numbers based on location. They say there is no plan to allow the Fun Math School to use the facilities at MSHS 141.

The Fun Math School is for kids grades 6 through 12. At first it will only house sixth-graders. The school has been the focus of controversy because some residents feel the building is not equipped to house older children since there is no auditorium, gymnasium, library or science labs.
