Generations joined at Celebrity Basketball Game and Family Day in Orchard Beach

(08/22/04) ORCHARD BEACH - The 10th annual Celebrity Basketball Game and Family Day at Orchard Beach on Sunday featured a hoops showdown between music lovers -- rap against salsa.

Bronx residents of all ages played basketball and enjoyed the company of some Bronx-born celebrities including performer "Power" and comedian Ruperto Vanderpool. The event started 11 years ago when organizer Julio Pabon says he realized different generations had a great deal to teach one another.

It is the third year that the Latino Sports organization has dedicated the event to the prevention of missing children. Young Bronx residents were able to get fingerprinted and go home with a new ID card that could help police find them if they ever get lost.

The festival has supported several other causes in previous years, like AIDS prevention and stopping military operations on the island of Vieques.
