Immigration rights group starts campaign in University Heights to educate people

(08/22/04) UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - Immigration advocates have launched a campaign to educate Bronx immigrants about their rights. The movement comes after advocates say thousands of immigrants have been deported since 9/11.

Officials say some immigrants may have been forced to leave because they were unclear about their rights. On Sunday, advocates handed out pamphlets explaining to people living in the Bronx what can cause them to get deported. Some reasons listed included criminal convictions, improper documentation and old orders of deportation.

Immigration rights group Families for Freedom, who sponsored the event, is currently conducting a survey about immigrant safety. Their results are due out next month.
