United Church in Morrisania gets $5,000 grant for repairs to century-old building
(08/29/04) MORRISANIA - The Bronx congregation of the United Church in Morrisania says they cannot afford to hire professionals to repair their century-old historic church building.
The church's pastor had begun fixing old leaks and crumbling walls in the building. Recently, church leaders also won a $5,000 landmark grant from the city to begin professional repairs, but the entire job could cost close to $1 million.
Most of the damage has been caused by water leaking from the 98-year-old roof. Church members are hoping to make significant progress on repairs with the grant money by the summer of 2006. That is when their building will turn 100 years old.
