Bronx doctors team up with restaurants and bars to encourage designated driving
(09/05/04) CITY ISLAND - During the Labor Day holiday weekend, a group of Bronx doctors will volunteer to help with designated driving efforts.
The new public health campaign is called Doctors for Designated Driving. They have joined forces with six Bronx bars and restaurants agreeing to provide free non-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers. They will also help drinkers get cabs for rides home.
Some establishments will also let drivers leave their cars in parking lots overnight if they get a cab ride home.
One challenge facing the designated driver campaign is getting the word out to drinkers. Several patrons at one of the participating bars did not know about the program.
