Schools Chancellor Klein optimistic about upcoming Bronx school year

(09/08/04) THE BRONX As the Bronx schools gear up for another year, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says great strides are being taken to ensure conditions are better for children.

At a meeting with reporters Wednesday, Klein said there will be more money in the budget this year to help improve school conditions. Although the amount of funds from the state isnt what he had hoped, Klein says the additional money will help. The chancellor also touched on several safety issues and said the performance of third-graders who tested to advance to fourth-grade was significant.

Klein also says there will be 12,000 new classroom seats to help overcrowding, 5,000 new teachers, 91 new schools and $8 million allotted for new books and supplies.

The chancellor would not comment on any new contracts for teachers.
