Hurricane Ivan pounds Jamaica and heads for the Florida coast

As Hurricane Ivan savages Jamaica, many Jamaicans living in Wakefield can only hope and pray for their families at home.

Many people in this community say they are keeping a close eye on the storm, watching the weather reports on television and calling family and friends back home. While the Jamaicans close and board up businesses and prepare to ride out the storm, residents in the Bronx say they feel helpless and wish there was more they could do to help.

With winds up to 145 miles per hour Ivan is packing a powerful punch and causing a lot of damage. Meteorologists say this could be the worst storm to hit Jamaica in a decade, reminding some in Wakefield of Hurricane Gilbert, which nearly leveled the island sixteen years ago.
