First all-girl public school in the Bronx opens its doors
For the first time in Bronx history, a public high school is established for girls only. The Young Women's Leadership School is located inside P.S. 182 in Harding Park, and for many of the girls enrolled it is a chance to be challenged academically.
Only 76 female students were selected to attend the all-girls school, and just a seventh grade class will be comprised this year. The school will eventually expand to the 12th grade level. The curriculum at the school focuses on leadership and academic excellence, and offers small classes, college preparation courses, and requires community service from the girls.
Like their counterpart, the Young Women's Leadership School in Harlem, the Bronx school officials expect the entire student body to graduate and move on to college.
