Former Bronx middle school teacher gets maximum sentence for sodomy

The former teacher and basketball coach who was convicted of sodomizing and sexually assaulting three young boys was sentenced to 2 1/3 to 7 years in jail Friday.

Gary Coleman, who was a math teacher at M.S. 158 and coached a neighborhood basketball team, was convicted for trading money for sexual favors with three of his players.

Coleman's lawyer had tried to get him a new trial, claiming prosecutors had been withholding information. Coleman's friends and family still hope he will be freed and be able to go back to working with kids again. But prosecutors say Coleman should never be allowed to work with kids again.

As for the three boys, they have received counseling and are now in high school.

Coleman plans to appeal his sentence.
