Bronx women participate in march to raise awareness for domestic violence

(09/26/04) HIGHBRIDGE - Hundreds of women, including more than 100 who donned wedding dresses, attempted to raise awareness for domestic violence in the annual March of Brides on Sunday afternoon.

Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. joined the women on the walk along various streets thorough the Bronx and Manhattan. He calls domestic violence an epidemic in the Bronx.

The fourth annual event marks the fifth anniversary of the killing of Gladys Ricart, a woman who was murdered on her wedding day. Those who wore the wedding dresses are part of the group New York Latinas Against Domestic Violence, who sponsor the march each year.

The marchers say so far this year, 49 Bronx and city residents have been killed in domestic violence incidents. They say they hope the march may help keep that number from reaching last year's total of 64.

The month of October is domestic violence awareness month. Sometime next month, News 12 The Bronx will broadcast a live two-hour discussion about domestic violence.
