Bronx residents get taste of the islands at Caribbean Family Day event in Woodlawn

(09/26/04) WOODLAWN - Bronx residents celebrated island culture Sunday at the Caribbean Family Day event in Woodlawn. Organizers say there was plenty of food, music, and fun for everyone along Webster Avenue.

Coming on the heels of the recent hurricanes that have devastated the Caribbean, many folks in attendance said this year's event felt more subdued than in previous years. Organizers say some of the musical groups that normally perform at the annual event were at a concert to benefit victims of the hurricanes.

Organizers say Caribbean Family Day began in the Bronx as an alternative to the annual Brooklyn event. It usually takes place during Labor Day weekend, but it was pushed back this year because of the Republican National Convention.
