Former state Senator Guy Velella released from jail early

The former state senator who pleaded guilty to bribery charges and was sentenced to a year in jail is was released Tuesday.

Guy Velella had been in Rikers Island since June but reportedly won an early release under a New York City Probation Department program. Velella pleaded guilty to taking bribes in exchange for steering contracts toward clients as part of deal to spare his 90-year-old father from serving jail time.

Some prisoners' rights experts say Velella should have served more time. They say the former state senator received special treatment by being released after three months.

Velella resigned from his Senate seat after representing communities in the Bronx and lower Westchester for 18 years. He also lost his license to practice law. Despite his guilty plea, Velella will still get his pension from the years he served in the legislature.
