City Council votes in favor of building water filtration plant at Van Cortlandt Park

The City Council voted Tuesday in favor of building a water filtration plant at Van Cortlandt Park under the Mosholu Golf Course.

The plan, which has been met with opposition, passed by a 45-5 vote with one council member not voting. Opponents of the filtration plant say it does not belong in the Bronx. But the Department of Environmental Protection chose the site over two others including an industrial area in Westchester. The Bronx will also get $240 million for park projects in exchange for the plant being built in the borough.

Now the only way to stop the plant from being built is through the courts. Members of some Bronx organizations say they are ready to file suit if necessary.
