Busted pipe causes sea of sorrow for some Van Nest residents

(09/29/04) VAN NEST Some residents in Van Nest are watching their belongings float in up to three feet of water after excessive rains ruptured an underground sewer pipe.

The pounding rain leveled on the Bronx from Hurricane Jeannes remnants backed up the pipe, causing it to break Wednesday evening. The water overflow resulting from the ruptured main flooded underground portions of the street and the basements of 12 nearby buildings.

Residents are spending most of the day Thursday cleaning up the water damage and salvaging their belongings. City crews are working on repairing the damaged pipe.
