City Council trying to remove health care roadblocks for immigrants in Bronx
(09/29/04) THE BRONX Members of the City Council Health Committee passed two resolutions Wednesday aimed at making health care access easier for foreign immigrants.
One passed proposal urges state officials to implement language assistance services in hospitals. According to city leaders, this would help break down language barriers between patients and the hospital staff.
The second measure aims to strike down a proposed federal regulation requiring hospitals to determine an individuals immigration status for proper reimbursement. Council members say the proposed regulation would put up even more of a roadblock for immigrants trying to get health care in Bronx hospitals.
