Missionary Christian Church parishioners continue fundraisers for a larger building

(10/02/04) CROTONA PARK EAST - Missionary Christian Church parishioners say they have outgrown their house of worship at 971 Jennings Street. Now, they are selling homemade Puerto Rican treats called alcapurrias to raise money for a larger church building.

So far, the fried treats have gotten rave reviews from many members of the community. The parishioners sold hundreds on Saturday and will continue selling them throughout the weekend.

The parishioners raised about $20,000 so far through food sales and other fundraisers. They need nearly $1 million to complete their new church. They already broke ground at the site on Tiffany Avenue, but construction is at a standstill until more money is raised.

The Bronx church has applied for loans but it has not been successful. Members say that is why they are relying heavily on the community's generosity.
