Doctors, nurses at Montefiore Medical Center help fight breast cancer

(10/02/04) MONTEFIORE MEDICAL CENTER - The medical team at Montefiore Medical Center wants to make Bronx women aware that a five-minute test could save their lives.

As part of breast cancer awareness month through October, the doctors there are spending the early part of each day offering free mammograms, pap smears and self-breast exam demonstrations to Bronx women who do not have health insurance.

Statistics show that early detection is a key component in beating cancer. Doctors and nurses hope learning the facts about breast cancer will help Bronx residents who may be afraid to undergo a mammogram.

Doctors recommend that women come in for mammograms every two years starting when they turn 40 and then every year after age 60.
