Family looks for answers after Rikers Island inmate dies in police custody

Circumstances surrounding the death of a Rikers Island inmate have a Bronx family mourning and looking for some answers. According to police, the 54-year-old man was taken to the Bronx Criminal Courthouse last Tuesday where he got into a fight and sustained serious injuries. The victim was taken to Lincoln Hospital on Thursday and removed from life support on Monday.Although it is not certain if the man died from a fall or a blow to the head, his family wants to know why they werent notified that he was in the hospital until the day before he died. Officials say they tried to notify the family when the victim was taken to the hospital, but couldnt reach anyone. The family and Department of Corrections are awaiting findings from the medical examiner to find out the exact cause of death.
