City suspends Section 8 housing program for Bronx and city homeless

City officials announced this week that they have suspended the Section 8 housing program for the 37,000 homeless citywide.

Instead, the city plans to offer a new program called 'Housing Stability Plus.' The program is a five-year rental assistance plan for anyone who has been homeless between two and five years. Those who are homeless say they don't think the new program will help because when they go to apply for assistance at the Bronx EAU they are having trouble proving they are homeless.

The state still has to sign off on the proposed program so until they do so homeless families will not be able to apply. Families currently on Section 8 will remain part of the program.
