Several students arrested after fight breaks out at Kennedy H.S. in Riverdale

Seven students were arrested Thursday after a larger fight broke out at John F. Kennedy High School in Riverdale.

School officials say the fight broke out around lunch time on the fifth floor. They say more than a dozen students were injured when school safety officers tried to stop the fight and one officer released pepper spray to break up the crowd.

EMS officials say five students were treated and released at the scene. Ten others, including a school safety officer, were taken to area hospitals for difficult breathing.

A Department of Education spokesperson says more than 20 students were involved in the fight. He says pepper spray is a tool used often during large student melees.
