Volunteer group gets an 'A' for Bronx school cleanup performance
(10/23/04) NORWOOD A group of volunteers spent their Saturday making some Bronx schools a little nicer for students.
Approximately 8,000 participants took part in the annual New York Cares Day in an effort to fix up several area schools. In order to be considered for maintenance help, schools submitted applications to the New York Cares organization. Representatives then visited the facilities to determine where the maintenance manpower would be allocated.
Officials of chosen schools say they often rely on the volunteer work of New York Cares for the well being of their students' environment. Many volunteers who spent the day cleaning say they are thrilled to help Bronx students.
According to the Department of Education, the volunteer cleanup work will help save the city approximately $1 million.
