Bronx turkey plant has new deadline to show it will clean up air

Many residents along Bronx River Avenue say the smell from a smoked turkey plant is horrendous. LSK Smoked Turkey Products Inc. now has 45 days to show the city they are making progress in installing a new air-filtration system.

Earlier in the year, the citys Environmental Control Board fined LSK. The company installed new equipment to filter out the smell, but officials say that did not work. If the plant does not meet city standards by January 25, it will be forced to shut down.

The union representing LSK workers says the company is considering a move to a more industrial part of the Bronx. If the factory is shut down, more than 50 employees will lose their jobs.
