Owners begin to pick up pieces after blaze rips through stores in Morris Heights

Owners of several small businesses along West Tremont and Davidson avenues are picking up the pieces of what is left of their stores one day after a fire ripped through them.

Fire officials now believe the blaze began in the beauty salon not in a vacant store. The beauty salon was completely gutted and several other stores including a church, auto body shop, restaurant, insurance company, clothing store and a bodega were badly damaged.

The business owners with insurance will have help rebuilding their shops. One local business teacher says while insurance may cost thousands, it is an investment that could save money in the long run. The owners with insurance say they are waiting for their providers to show up and assess the damage.

Meantime, fire officials say the blaze is still under investigation but does not look suspicious.
