Potential plans for Pelham Bay museum site has many residents concerned

The potential plans for the site of the former Smithsonian Indian Museum in Pelham Bay has many resident and community leaders concerned.

Jimmy Vacca, from Community Board 10, says he heard from a reliable source that the Board of Education is evaluating the property to see if it could support a high school. Vacca and other community members say they are concerned that the area cannot accommodate a 3,000-student school.

Board of Education officials say they will neither confirm nor deny the rumor. They say they are looking at many options to relieve the citywide problem of school overcrowding. Vacca says the mayor will make the final decision on whether a school will be built on the site.
