Parks department turns down donation to help renovate a park in Riverdale

Residents in Riverdale who are fed up with the conditions at Seton Park have taken matters into their own hands to fix it up. The only problem is the city parks department won't let them.

Don Kolinoski coaches Riverdale Little League. He's part of a group that has collected tens of thousands of dollars worth of materials to fix the park as well as donated time from carpenters. But a spokesman from the parks department says while officials are grateful for the offer, they don't normally accept donations of materials and supplies. Parks department officials also say the donated material and labor would create a liability.

Local Community Board 8 estimates that it would cost more than $2 million to fix the park. Residents say they are offering close to $200,000 worth of supplies and labor and all they want in return is a safe ball field for their kids.

Parks department officials say they plan to do limited renovations at the park.
