Bronx residents learn more about premature births

During Prematurity Awareness Month, one Bronx family is sharing the story of how its child was born 11 weeks early and is now almost 2 and half years old.

The Kretzmers call their child Grace Kelly their Amazing Grace. They say two and half years later, Grace is very healthy and active. The Kretzmers child is just one of the thousands of preterm babies born every year in New York. However, not every baby is as lucky as Grace. According to the health department, the Bronx has the highest rate of infant mortality.

Doctors say smoking, drinking, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity are all risk factors for preterm delivery. But they say many times they do not know why babies are born too early.

Many doctors are doing research to find out why so many women have preterm deliveries.
