Wild turkeys call golf course in Pelham Bay Park home
When you think of wild turkeys, the Bronx may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But in Pelham Bay Park, wild turkeys call the golf course home.
Parks officials say don't be surprised to see the turkeys waddling around near City Island or by the entrance to Orchard Beach.
Full-grown male wild turkeys can measure up to 4 feet tall and weigh up to 20 pounds. The turkeys can also fly up to 55 miles-per-hour. The wildlife manager at Pelham Bay Park says seeing the turkeys in the Bronx is a good sign. He says after being hunted the turkeys have been able to make quite a comeback in areas where it was thought they couldn't survive.
While hunting for wild turkeys is allowed in some parts of the state, it's prohibited in the Bronx.
