Casa Del Sol director files appeal to keep the BX community center open

The director of Casa Del Sol, a community center in the Bronx, has filed an appeal in Bronx Supreme Court to keep the center open.

To show their support, dozens of activists gathered at the courthouse to demand the center stay open at its current Mott Haven location. They say Casa Del Sol is vital to the Bronx community, offering such services as an art gallery, performance space and after-school programs.

But the city wants to give the organization ACORN ownership of the Casa Del Sol building. ACORN is planning to create affordable housing at the location.

The director of Casa Del Sol says giving ACORN ownership is illegal, and supporters just don't understand why ACORN can't use another site. ACORN officials say it's unfair for one group to claim the whole building.
