City Council makes recommendations for improvements at food stamp offices

(11/20/04) MOTT HAVEN - The nation's food stamps program is meant to prevent people from going hungry, but a new City Council report shows that some Bronx and New York City residents are not getting the help to which they are entitled.

An employee at the food stamp office in Mott Haven tells News 12 the Bronx that it is normal to have long waits and disorganized service at the office. City Council investigators had similar findings when they visited each of the city's 36 food stamp offices. The council made several recommendations to help make the system more user friendly, including putting food stamp applications online.

According to the food bank for New York City, nearly half the Bronx and city residents who can get food stamps are not enrolled.
