Transportation group says legislation to register bicycles has been put on hold

(11/20/04) THE BRONX - After pressure from a transportation group, Bronx Councilwoman Madeline Provenzano (D-Bronx) may be reconsidering legislation that would cost Bronx residents to pay to ride their bicycles.

Transportation Alternatives launched a campaign to stop Provenzano's bill from becoming law. But the group now tells News 12 the Bronx she is reconsidering the legislation and is not currently pushing it forward.

Still, the legislation still hasn't been withdrawn. It would make riders register their bicycles and pay a fee for it, similarly to how drivers register cars. The bill is also calling for penalties if Bronx residents do not follow the rules such as fines up to $300 dollars and bicycles being confiscated.
