Car jumps Bronx River Parkway guardrail, lands in a Harrod Avenue backyard

(11/21/04) HARROD AVENUE - A car jumped the guardrail at Exit 4 of the Bronx River Parkway Sunday afternoon and crashed through a fence and into a backyard on Harrod Avenue. No one was hurt, but residents say similar incidents happen often.

Police say a 20-year-old man was driving southbound with four passengers when he lost control trying to make the turn. The driver told News 12 the Bronx he tried to slow down, but his brakes failed. Cops say it was an accident, and the driver was not issued a summons.

Bronx residents living around the accident site say cars constantly crash into the fence, and they the Department Of Transportation (DOT) to do something to prevent similar crashes. DOT officials say they will send engineers to the location Monday to assess the situation. The fencing could be changed and other safety measures may be added as a result of their evaluation.
