Velella's attorney seeks temporary restraining order to delay his return to jail
Former state Senator Guy Velella's attorney is in court Monday trying to obtain a temporary restraining order to delay his client's return to jail.
On Friday, the new members of the New York City Local Conditional Release Commission ordered that Velella be sent back to jail. The decision came after the commission ruled that its predecessors illegally released Velella early. Velella, who spent 18 years as a state senator in the Bronx and Westchester, served only three months of his one-year sentence after pleading guilty to bribery charges.
Velella is supposed to report back to jail by 5 p.m. Monday, but his lawyer is hoping he won't have to since he was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.
