Takeover of private express bus service in the BX and city postponed for third time

The City Council voted Tuesday to postpone the takeover of private express bus service in the Bronx and city for a third time.

The Council extended the deadline at the request of the mayor. The chair of the transportation committee says the longer the city takes to work out a deal, the more federal funds to purchase new buses are being lost.

However, the Bloomberg administration says it secured millions of dollars in federal funds to purchase 300 new express and local buses. According to Mayor Bloomberg, the availability of the additional funds is a significant milestone in the transition of service to the MTA bus company.

Officials say if there arent any more extensions, the MTA will take over Liberty Lines January 15 and the New York Bus Service in March.
