BX residents learn to avoid extra 'holiday weight' without depriving themselves

(11/27/04) CO-OP CITY - Many Bronx residents overindulge on food during the holiday season. But health experts say there are ways for folks to avoid packing on the pounds without depriving themselves during the holidays.

Health experts believe the key to keeping the weight off is to approach holiday feasts with balance and moderation. They recommend eating a small healthy snack like salad or fruit, before the main course to avoid overeating.

Experts say making time to exercise is also important because it will help burn excess calories as well as eliminate the stress that can be brought on by the busy season.

Health experts agree that it is important to eat regular, moderately sized meals. They say trying to loose weight by deprivation often backfires, leading to overeating later on. They add that eating high-fiber foods, like vegetables and whole grains, will make people feel full and help lessen cravings for foods with a higher content of fat.
