Bronx Albanians get together to celebrate their homeland?s independence

More than 100 Albanians gathered at the Bronx House Community Center Sunday to celebrate their countrys independence.

The event included music, food, and a lecture from Albanias future ambassador to Turkey. November 28, 1912 is the day Albanian Independence was proclaimed at 500 years of rule by the Ottoman Turkish Empire.

Local Albanian residents say they are a growing community in Pelham Parkway. In 2000 the United States Census reported that more than 7,000 Albanians lived in the Bronx, which is about half of one percent of the total population. Bronx Albanians say they get together approximately five times a year for large celebrations and festivals.
