Former state Senator Velella ordered back to jail; defense to appeal

A judge has ordered former state Senator Guy Velella to return to jail Monday.

State Supreme Court Justice Lottie Wilkins denied a defense request for a delay and ordered Velella to surrender by 5 p.m. Velella's defense promised an immediate appeal.

Velella was imprisoned for after admitting his role in a lucrative bribery scheme. The Local Conditional Release Commission ruled that Velella and his co-defendants were freed illegally in September after serving about three months of a one-year sentence.

Velella served 18 years as state senator in Westchester and the Bronx.
