Success of South Bronx H.S. leads to unveiling of new high school complex
The mayor and schools chancellor unveiled a plan Thursday to build a new four high school complex in Mott Haven using South Bronx High School as a model.
Three years ago South Bronx High School had less than 50 percent of its students graduating but after being broken into three smaller schools, nearly all of its 1,000 students are passing. The mayor and schools chancellor are hoping that success will be duplicated when it opens a new complex just down the street from South Bronx High School.
The school will a be six-acre complex from 153rd to 156th streets and will hold four small high schools. The schools will share a gym, library, auditorium and athletic field.
Parents are thrilled with the news saying that the smaller schools are helping to make improvements in education. The new facility is slated to open in September 2009.
