Bronx officials divided over what to do with vacant lot in Kingsbridge

A city owned lot on W. 230th Street and Broadway is at the center of controversy.

Community Board 8 members want the lot to become an EMS ambulance garage. But some lawmakers want to convert the vacant lot into a chain store or maybe a movie multiplex.

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx) says the plan to make the lot a retail center or movie theater spells good news for an economically depressed area. He says there are better places for an EMS garage, adding that the area is better suited for commercial development.

Some residents, however, feel the area is too congested so bringing more stores would not be a good idea. Small business owners also fear having additional competition and say business in the area is slow.

The Department of Economic Development will now consider the proposals and make a final decision in the spring.
