Doctors at Montefiore Medical Center say the best gift is the gift of life

As the number of people waiting for an organ donation grows, doctors at Montefiore Medical Center say the best gift this holiday season is the gift of life.

There are currently more than 7,000 people waiting for a transplant in the city, and doctors say that number is growing. Many of those waiting will never make it to surgery so doctors are urging people to consider becoming a donor.

Doctors say with a new surgery procedure those donating a kidney could be back to work in a week. One woman who donated a kidney said she would do it again in a heartbeat.

Meantime, Governor Pataki (R-NY) passed a bill allowing donors one month paid recovery from work in New York State. For more information, call the National Kidney Foundation at 1-800-622-9010 or send an e-mail to livingdonors@kidney.org .
