Fines could be getting stiffer for Bronx landlords failing to turn on the heat

Fines could be getting stiffer for Bronx landlords who fail to turn on the heat or hot water for their tenants.

Members of the City Councils Committee on Housing and buildings passed a measure Tuesday that would double landlord penalties for no heat. The measure would also fine landlords an additional $1,000 each day for subsequent violations.

Many Bronx tenants say they have complained to their landlords and the city that their homes are freezing. One landlord says the heat is on in his building, however, he was cited with two violations from the city for no heat in some apartments.

The measure still has to go before a full Council vote to be approved.
