Shootout in Bronx apartment building leaves one dead, NYPD detective injured

A shootout in a Bronx apartment building on White Plains Road in the Wakefield section Wednesday left one person dead and a New York police detective injured.

Police say the detective was traveling in his private car when he noticed a man walking on the street with a pistol in his back pocket. They say the officer stopped and followed the man inside the building in the Wakefield section.

Once inside, police say the man, who neighbors say lived in the building, began shooting at the detective. The officer responded with a fatal burst of gunfire. The detective was hit twice and is undergoing surgery at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center.
