Bronx cab drivers urged to take extra precautions against robberies

A city-wide alert is in effect reminding Bronx and city cab drivers to take extra precautions when picking up passengers. Officials say it is the time of year when robbers prey on drivers.

Some Bronx Livery cab drivers say driving a taxi is one of the most dangerous jobs. One driver recalls when a passenger put a gun to his head and demanded money. Officials say weapons can be easily hidden in winter coats, so Bronx Livery drivers need to pay extra attention if they see something suspicious.

In order to protect Livery drivers, the president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers tells drivers to leave their valuables at home. He adds that drivers should not keep much cash in the car. The president also says that if confronted, drivers should give the robbers money and not fight back.
