Kids launch campaign to get Pelham Bay site turned into a children's museum
A letter-writing campaign is underway in an effort to turn the former site of the Smithsonian's American Indian Museum storage facility into a children's museum.
Students from 10 Bronx schools are addressing letters to Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Pataki (R-NY) and President Bush hoping to get officials to do something useful with the land. Currently, bids have been made for the property, which is reportedly worth $7-$9 million. According to community leaders, one of the bids is from the city's School Construction Authority.
Bids on the property will be accepted through January 17. A spokesperson for the Smithsonian says no comment on the sale will be made until after the deadline.
