St. Barnabas Hospital opens newly expanded pediatric emergency room
St. Barnabas Hospital unveiled its newly expanded pediatrics emergency department and trauma center Tuesday.
The new trauma center allows doctors more space to handle extreme emergencies for both children and adults. The new childrens ER includes expanded waiting areas, more beds for patients, animal-shaped exam tables and a separate area dedicated to treating asthma.
The childrens ER has been opened since October. The medical staff says it has noticed a difference in how patients react to care. Staff members add that since the expansion, the number of patients who leave before treatment has gone done significantly.
Hospital officials say the ER has approximately 100,000 visits a year. They say the hospital is the second busiest trauma center in the Bronx. The expansion is part of a $7 million project at St. Barnabas.
